If you’re reading this, you’re probably thinking of tackling a long distance hike, or at least you’re curious about what it takes to do one. I’ve spent years doing these hikes, and I’ve learned that most people who try them are totally unprepared. What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think about a long hike? Is it the scenery, the physical challenge, or the gear you’ll need? For me, it’s the gear, because if you don’t have the right stuff, you’re not going to make it very far.
When I started doing long hikes, I thought the key to success was getting the most expensive gear out there. Then I found out that’s not true. I was on a hike last year, and I met a guy who was wearing pioneer camp womens merino socks, which he swore by. I was skeptical at first, but after trying them out, I realized that good socks can make all the difference. Now I’m not saying you need to go out and buy those exact socks, but you get the idea. Good gear is important, but it’s not just about the brand name or the price tag.
Before you even start thinking about gear, you need to plan your route. This is where most people screw up. They just start walking, without any idea of where they’re going or what they’ll need to get there. Don’t be that person. Take the time to map out your route, and make sure you know what kind of terrain you’ll be facing. Are you going to be hiking through mountains, or will you be stuck in the desert? Knowing what to expect will help you prepare, and it will make the whole experience a lot more enjoyable.
Packing is an art. You don’t want to bring too much, or you’ll be weighed down and miserable. But at the same time, you don’t want to forget anything important. So what do you bring? The basics are a given: food, water, shelter. But what about the little things, like socks and underwear? These might seem like small things, but they can make a big difference in your comfort level. And comfort is key when you’re hiking for weeks at a time.
Safety is a big concern when you’re hiking alone. What if you get hurt, or lost? Who’s going to come and find you? These are all good questions, and they’re things you should be thinking about before you even start your hike. Make sure someone knows your route, and your expected return time. And always, always carry a first aid kit with you. You never know when you’re going to need it.
Finally, don’t forget to enjoy yourself. A long distance hike can be a real chore, but it can also be an incredible experience. Take the time to appreciate the scenery, and the people you meet along the way. And don’t be afraid to take a break, and rest your feet. You’re not going to win any awards for hiking the farthest, or the fastest. So why not take your time, and make the experience enjoyable?
